Dental disease is the second most common serious disease we routinely diagnose. Dental disease can lead to pain, heart disease, kidney disease, lung disease, liver disease and other conditions that threaten the health and comfort of your pet. Routine dental care and cleanings increase the quality of life and lifespan of our pets.

What types of dental care for dogs do you offer at your clinic?

We offer full dental cleaning/polishing as well as extractions with a digital dental x-ray on site. We also go through preventive dental care including home care, brushing teeth, water additives as well as dental diets. Preventative measures are the best way to prevent major dental work down the road.

How often should you brush your dog’s teeth?

If you can brush your dog’s teeth you must always use a toothpaste specifically for dogs. Human toothpaste contains fluoride which is toxic and should not be swallowed. Daily brushing is optimal, but as long as you brush your dog’s teeth at least once every 48hrs you will remove all plaque before it can become solid tartar.

Why is oral and dental health important?

Oral hygiene is an often overlooked but an important factor in your dog’s overall health. If he/she has a toothache or sore gum’s they are dealing with pain and stress that you may not even know about. Left untreated, bacteria introduced by the problem can enter the bloodstream and affect his heart, liver or kidneys. The good news? A very important part of health care for our pets is maintaining dental health. We recommend regular dental cleaning and assessment for all of our patients. These dental procedures include pre-operative bloodwork, pain medications and intravenous fluid administration just like all of the rest of the procedures we perform at our hospital.
